We are still accepting volunteers. Please complete the online application today!
Volunteers must be 16+ and are encouraged to volunteer for 2 shifts. Shifts are typically 4-6 hours between the hours of 9:30am-10pm, July 13th-July 17th. Volunteers will be asked to review training materials sent to them via email. In return you will receive invaluable experience working with a diverse group of patrons, artists, fellow volunteers, and professionals, all while giving back to this great city!
Volunteering is easy and exciting! We are looking for support in the following areas:
Stage Area Services (Capital One Stage, Tremont Tent, Fountain Stage)
While our stage managers are busy running the show, we need volunteers to support the areas around the stage. Stage Area Service volunteers will spend their shift keeping refreshments stocked for artists, maintaining a neat and clean backstage environment, keeping fresh towels on hand, supporting security to ensure only authorized personnel are backstage and performing additional tasks as assigned. These volunteers will need to pass a background check! Shifts are available between 10am and 10pm (10pm on 7/16).
Festival Ambassador (Various Locations)
We’re looking for friendly, upbeat, and outgoing volunteers who are eager to greet and assist guests attending Outside the Box. Festival Ambassadors will act as walking information guides by providing patrons with a warm welcome, directions from stage to stage, information about artists, performances and the festival as a whole. Ambassadors will play a crucial role in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all audience members. Additionally, Festival Ambassadors can be stationed at our accessible seating areas as well as our Accessibility Info Tent in order to provide assistance to patrons as requested. We ask that you be flexible and ready to be transferred to an area in need of a volunteer at any time! Shifts are available between 10:30am and 9pm (10pm on 7/16).
Information Station Assistant
If you enjoy providing first-class customer service, this is the job for you! We are looking for friendly and helpful volunteers to provide assistance at the festival’s Information Stations. Volunteers working at Information Stations should become familiar with the layout of the festival grounds and be able to answer questions about performance times, location of vendors, ATMs, ADA Viewing areas, restrooms, phones, lost and found, and much more. (This information will be provided to you in advance). Information Station Assistants will work with Festival Ambassadors to create a welcoming and accessible environment for all. Job involves time spent on feet or sitting behind a table. Shifts are available between 10am and 9pm (10pm on 7/16).
Sponsor Services Assistant (Innovation Tent and Sponsor Areas)
Outside the Box will host an Innovation Village as well as two sponsor areas on the Boston Common for the duration of the festival. Sponsors will have stations set up in specified areas and we are in need of professionally minded volunteers to provide assistance to our sponsors! Volunteers will be asked to maintain area cleanliness, answer sponsor/patron questions, check badges to ensure authorized personnel are the only people gaining access to designated areas, and fulfill any reasonable requests asked of them by sponsors or the Volunteer Leader. Shifts are available between 10am and 9pm (10pm on 7/16).
Young Audience Area Support (Lily Pad)
We’re looking for teachers and other volunteers who have experience working with young audiences (kids!) to assist with the programs hosted at the Lily Pad stage area. Young Audience Area Volunteers will act as the eyes and ears of the young audiences area, provide parents and families with festival information as needed, notify Festival Operations of any concerns in the area, and fulfill additional responsibilities assigned by the Volunteer Leader. This year the Lily Pad will also hosts evening performances for all ages. Shifts are available between 10am and 9pm (10pm on 7/16).
Volunteer Registration (Volunteer Check-in Tent)
By volunteers and for volunteers! You will be asked to greet fellow volunteers, check in volunteers, prepare them for their shift, answer any questions they may have, orient volunteers to their position, direct volunteers to their Volunteer Leader, and distribute necessary information and items. Shifts are available between 10am and 8:30pm (9:30pm on 7/16.)
HOW DO I GET TO THE FESTIVAL?
We strongly recommend volunteers take the MBTA to the festival, as parking is limited. Take the Green Line or Red Line to the Park Street MBTA Station. If you do choose to drive, we suggest parking in the Boston Common Garage located on Charles St.
WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE?
Please arrive 20-30 minutes before the start of your scheduled shift. Volunteers will be given a brief break during their shifts as assigned by the Volunteer Leader.
WHERE DO I GO WHEN I ARRIVE AT THE BOSTON COMMON?
Your first stop is Volunteer Check-In. You can find the Check-In tent on the Boston Common near the baseball fields along the “Mayor’s Walk” (the main pathway on the Common that leads to the Public Gardens).
WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?
Wear comfortable clothing and shoes and be sure to dress for the weather- the festival is held outside, rain or shine! We’ll provide you with a t-shirt that should be worn during your shift, light snacks (make sure to have a meal before you arrive) and sunscreen. We suggest you bring a water bottle and a cell phone charger. When deciding what to bring to the festival, keep in mind there is no secure storage for backpacks or bags.
CAN I VOLUNTEER WITH A FRIEND OR A GROUP?
If you would like to volunteer with a friend or arrange for a group to volunteer please email the Volunteer Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org. We will do our best to accommodate your requests!
